Ⅰ FeaturesⅡ History and ProfileⅢ RequirementsCreative Science and EngineeringAdvanced Science and EngineeringFundamental Science and EngineeringCONTENTSWith the upgrading of processing technology, such as the ability to separate base products, the goal of this division is to optimize the flow of resources as a whole, and to minimize the environmental load during resource usage in terms of enabling environmentally-friendly resource recycling and cleaning up the environment. ◆ Materials Processing Engineering DivisionIn various manufacturing processes of functional materials, such as metallic materials, studies are being conducted in relation to the physico-chemical analysis of processes involved using various academic methods such as “thermodynamics”, “electrochemistry”, and “quantum chemistry”. In addition, computer simulations are also being conducted. To be specific, this division concerns the following: the development of a new manufacturing process for titanium, the production of a compound semiconductor using an electrochemical method, the measurement of properties of non-ferrous metal smelting, the elucidation of environmental substances using quantum chemistry, and an analysis of reaction mechanisms.◆ Environmental Protection Engineering DivisionThere are two laboratories in this research division: the laboratory of Life Cycle Environmetal Assessment, and the Laboratory of Atmospheric and Aquatic Environmental Chemistry. The Department of Life Cycle Environmetal Assessment conducts research related to environmental impact assessment, environmental management and environmental policy with the academic deciplines of risk assessment, climate science, ecology, resource recycling, environmental economics, environmental sociology, and sustainable science. The Laboratory of Atmospheric and Aquatic Environmental Chemistry conducts fieldwork related to the atmosphere, aquatic environments, and forests, using investigative processes associated with the academic disciplines of atmospheric chemistry, water chemistry, analytical chemistry, geochemistry, meteorology, forest ecology, and soil science.◆ Petrology and Mineralogical Science DivisionOur research and education activities focus on elucidating the origins, evolution and phenomena of Earth and planets in the solar system using various experimental and analytical methods as well as field survey. We work on clarifying change in reaction, the crystal structure and the physical properties of various materials to apply the nano-/micro- scale research to the macroscopic Earth. Geochemistry Laboratory conducts high-pressure and high-temperature experiments to simulate the extreme environment equivalent to Earth’s interior to deepen our understanding of Earth’s inner structure, deep-Earth material/element transfer and formation process. Mineralogy Laboratory investigates the structure, composition, and physico-chemical properties of minerals and other materials that characterize not only the Earth’s interior but also its surface, aiming to elucidate the mechanisms governing the Earth’s environment and material cycles.107107
