Creative Science and EngineeringⅠ FeaturesⅡ History and ProfileⅢ RequirementsFundamental Science and EngineeringAdvanced Science and EngineeringCONTENTSThe Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry aims to foster individuals with a strong foundation in fundamental chemistry, with flexible thinking and creativity. This goal is achieved though engaging in research activities that encompass: investigating the reactivity and properties of materials at the atomic and molecular levels, which may involve developing quantum chemical calculation methods and various spectroscopic techniques; establishing synthetic methods to access novel organic molecules and metal complexes; analyzing reaction mechanisms; and synthesizing compounds with practical functions and reactivity; and exploring various topics in the field of life sciences based on chemistry. In addition, our students are encouraged to present their master’s thesis research at domestic meetings, and preferably, to share their work in international conferences and in scientific journals. The Department comprises four research divisions: physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic and analytical chemistry, and biochemistry. In this research division, research and education concerning the structural aspects of molecules and molecular assembly, electronic state, vibrational state, properties, and chemical reaction mechanisms are conducted. Our investigation involves a variety of experimental techniques such as infrared/Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared absorption spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, and nonlinear spectroscopy, and a scanning probe microscope, to observe the electronic state and vibrational state of molecules and solids, and to measure the electrical and optical properties. Furthermore, we make theoretical prediction of physical properties by quantum chemical calculations using the methods such as the molecular or bital method as well as the density functional theory. We also aim to elucidate the mechanism of chemical reactions by molecular dynamics method. The materials to be studied encompass materials such as organic and inorganic materials, electroconductive polymers, biological polymers, and functional materials. Through these studies, we aim to discover new phenomena and properties, construct basic theories, and develop high-performance organic electronic devices (light-emitting diode, transistor, solar battery).◆ Organic ChemistryIn this research division, we conduct research and education focusing on synthetic organic chemistry, functional organic chemistry, reaction organic chemistry, and bioorganic chemistry. Our goal is to gain a thorough understanding of organic reactions, as well as the structures and properties of organic molecules from a perspective of fundamental chemistry. We investigate innovative approaches to access new compounds, explore their properties, and design and produce functional materials.
