We also attempt to develop new therapeutic method for regeneration of the nervous system.◆ Molecular Medicine and BiochemistryWe investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in the development and progression of metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, fatty liver and atherosclerosis, and develop new therapeutic strategies for the diseases. ◆ Molecular OncologyWe study cancer-associated genes which are involved in aberrant growth, invasion, metastasis characteristic of cancer cells, and figure out the molecular mechanisms of tumorigenesis using in vitro and in vivo experimental systems. For this purpose, we also develop original screening and evaluation systems.◆ Biomolecular Assembling ScienceConstruction of molecular assemblies and supramolecular structures from biomacromolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides and bioactive substances with phospholipids or medical polymers, and application studies as functional molecular devices. Development of artificial platelets, drug carriers, gene carriers, nanosheets, and probes for molecule imaging. ◆ Biomaterials Science and EngineeringDevelop polymer-based biomaterials and biodevices/systems. Elucidate the interaction mechanisms between these materials and biomolecules and tissues, establish design theories for novel materials/devices, and develop application methods. Control cell attachment/detachment and other behaviors using culture substrates whose surface microstructure and physico-chemical properties are converted by external stimuli. Construct three-dimensional biological tissues with cellular localizations and functions similar to those of living tissues, and apply them to regenerative medicine and drug development. Apply polymeric materials with biocompatible rheological properties to surgical treatments. Develop sensor materials that can detect biological gases, infectious substances, and mechano-stress and apply them to diagnostics.◆ Biomolecular Science and EngineeringWe have analyzed environmental gene/bio resources for industrial and biomedical applications and for elucidation of ecosystem as an aspect of environment conservation. Especially new challenging technologies for single cell genomics and transcriptomics have been developed using microfluidics and so on. These technologies has widely applied to all kinds of organisms, such as microbes, plant, mammalian cells. These challenges open the new science with novel findings. 141141
