If a student chooses to take more than 10 credits of Group A1 courses, then any credits above the required number will be counted as credits under the “Additional Electives” category.Students are free to select any courses to fulfill this requirement, but we strongly encourage students to make thoughtful and coherent selections that balance depth with breadth. We strongly recommend that students include “Good and Evil: Great Books of the Humanities” and “Individual and Society: Great Books of the Social Sciences” among their selections because they provide an broad yet deep overview of the humanities and social sciences, respectively. Moreover, from the standpoint of coverage and coherence, we strongly recommend that students taking certain courses from the course list take them as a pair rather than in isolation. This does not necessarily mean taking both courses in the same quarter/semester. It means taking one course of the pair during one quarter/semester and taking the other course of the pair in a subsequent quarter/semester. Courses that should be taken as a pair are listed below.1) Good and Evil: Great Books of the Humanities2) Art of the West 3) Introduction to Macroeconomics 4) History of Pre-Modern Japan 5) History of Western Civilizationto the Renaissance6) History of Science 7) Ancient and Medieval Philosophy 8) Classical Social Theory 23
